Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held meeting with Chamber & Association Presidents Briefed about government’s energy strategy.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, M.P.held a meeting with a group business leaders and media representatives at the Bangladesh Secretariat on 14 September. ICC Bangladesh President Mahbubur Rahman and a number of Chamber/Association Presidents attended the meeting. At the meeting, the Prime Minister presented the broad direction of the government’s energy strategy. State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Mr. Anindya Islam Amit, M.P. presented a detailed plan titled “Challenges and Future Roadmap of Bangladesh’s Power and Energy Sector.” The roadmap comes at a time when industries have been facing shortages of gas and electricity, affecting production and increasing operating pressures. A technical problem following an accident at one of the country’s two floating LNG terminals had recently constrained gas supplies to industries, power plants and other consumers. The Prime Minister said the technical problem had been resolved and that gas supply was expected to return close to the level prevailing before the recent disruption. The Prime Minister stressed that adequate and uninterrupted power and energy supplies would be essential for Bangladesh to achieve its goal of becoming a US$1 trillion economy by 2034. He also sought cooperation from the business community and other stakeholders in implementing the government’s energy plan, noting that problems affecting industry and business ultimately have consequences for the wider economy. He said that the government has acknowledged that the country’s energy challenges cannot be resolved immediately and that implementation of major projects will require time. Therefore, the strategy combines measures for immediate supply improvement with medium- and longer-term investments in domestic exploration, LNG infrastructure, diversified generation, renewable energy and power-sector infrastructure. Speaking at the meeting, ICC Bangladesh President Mahbubur Rahman appreciated the Government’s Five-Year Strategic Framework (2026–2031) for the power and energy sector. He urged the Government to expedite implementation of its programme for drilling and workover of 150 gas wells to increase domestic gas supply and strengthen the country’s energy security. He also welcomed the Government’s plan to develop around 10,000 MW of solar power over the next five years, noting the importance of expanding renewable energy capacity to meet Bangladesh’s growing energy needs. The meeting was attended by Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Finance and Planning Dr. Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Invest Bangladesh Chairman Ashik Chowdhury, Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin, Bangladesh Bank Governor Mr. Md Mostaqur Rahman; Power Secretary Ms.Mirana Mahrukh and Energy Secretary Mr. Md Ziaul Huq.
